IN A WORLD OF NOS, FIND YOUR YES

“No, Maia. Girls don’t do that!”

“No, Maia, you’re too small!”

“No, Maia, you’re not strong enough!”

I was a caught in a world of NOs desperately seeking to find my YES. Here’s the story of how I said YES to a life without limits rather than being defined by my behavioral environment and five essential tips to help you find your breakthrough in 2017.

BREAKTHROUGH 1: ONLY YOU CAN DEFINE YOUR WORTH!

In my traditional Filipino family, boys were elevated above girls. I grew up with four brothers who could do anything. While my sister and I were limited to girl things: staying home and not sweating. My brothers rubbed it in my face as they made up songs calling me “bruha” (translates to “witch” in Tagalog) and baboon. These experiences strengthened my will to break free and define my own self-worth every time I said YES! All the YESes in my life added up to owning my own fitness studio in Alexandria called The WorX by Maia. Now, my family is my number one support!

BREAKTHROUGH 2: OPPORTUNITIES ONLY EXIST IF YOU TAKE ACTION.

Growing up in a family that didn’t support girls playing sports, I found myself in a constant struggle for time, money and energy. As a girl and young woman, I was consistently finding a way home, a way to practice, and a way to school. Since practice took place after hours, I had to beg and borrow rides. Consistently, I had to walk miles to get a ride to basketball. As a full time student and athlete, I didn’t have an opportunity for a job. Every Christmas or birthday or anytime I could earn money, I had to save it. Being the lightest wrestler on the all-male team, I had to bring a high level of energy every day to simply compete. It taught me to not be defined by my size, but by the energy I bring.

BREAKTHROUGH 3: SEEK OUT YOUR DREAMS. FIND YOUR CHEERLEADER.

No one reaches a high level of success without support. Find the cheerleaders in life that will guide you along the way. The cheerleaders in my life elevated my confidence to succeed at a high level. Coach Scott Racek saw past me being a girl and asked me to be part of his wrestling team. He believed in me so much he invested in me by buying me wrestling gear and paying for food during away matches. If it wasn’t for my loving husband and my business coaches: Jeff Sherman, James Nellis and Brian Sweeney, I wouldn’t have the tenacity and the ability to leave my tenured teaching job and go full time at The WorX. With my third kid due in May, to be able to say I’m doing what I love and still able to be home with my kids is my life’s biggest accomplishment.

BREAKTHROUGH 4: FIND YOUR TRIBE.

MAIA WITH HER HUSBAND, SEAN, AND THEIR CHILDREN TRYSTAN AND VIOLET. THEY ARE EXPECTING THEIR THIRD CHILD IN MAY.

Find people who resonate with your soul. Playing rugby for James Madison University, I learned that tackles will happen but you get up again and again for your team. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, who make you better, who you respect, and who you look up to. You’ll be better for it. Recently in our The WorX book club, a member shared how her tribe changed in less than a year because she actively sought people with the same goals of being physically, emotional and mentally fit.

BREAKTHROUGH 5: WITH RISK, COMES REWARDS.

Life happens. Not everyday is perfect. Last night I was up for three hours with baby Violet and I had a training at 6am. In this life, you have a choice. You can choose to be a great mom. You can choose to be a great business owner. You can choose whether or not you will let your body image or your past, determine your worth. I’m extremely proud of the eight women in this article that found their YES! I hope their stories also inspire you!

I SAID YES TO… PRACTICING WHAT I PREACH!

Jessica Taylor, Mental Health Therapist LOST 100 – FOUND MYSELF

Why did you join the WorX?
I joined The WorX when I realized I couldn’t ever experience authentic happiness with the way that I
was living my life. For almost 20 years, I lacked the ability to think positive, open my mind, or consider
my potential. I felt like I was a hostage to my body.
What was your defining moment to join?
I had a really awful plane ride in which I felt fat shamed and humiliated. I got off that plane telling myself
I’d never feel that way again. And that following week, I came to my first TheWorXclass. And guess
what? I never felt that way again.
What have been your WINS at The WorX?
My wins have been life changing–losing 100+lbs, establishing important connections with those that want a life change, gaining a new perspective, learning how to eat, and I trust myself now.

I SAID YES TO… FINDING POWER!

What has made you the happiest about joining The WorX?

The WorX taught me the power of affirmative words. It filled a gap in me that allowed me to start giving to others. “You are a beast”, “you inspire” and “missed you today” are powerful words that have moved me past the negative words that have internally littered my head.

What have been your WINS at The WorX?

My biggest win is definitely feeling like an old lady can still be a bad ass. Sometimes I marvel that I am 53 and keeping up with these youngsters. I have a safe encouraging environment that allows me to keep progressing. Feeling my voice grow in confidence has been a win as well as being a part of and contributing to the culture by being part of the morning crowd.

When you think of The WorX, what comes to mind?

I think of an open door. What’s your best advice to someone who wants to change? My advice to anyone wanting to make a change is two-fold. First, align yourself with successful people so you don’t recreate the wheel. Secondly, keep retrying. Changes really need to happen with small adjustments. Failure is not a set back—just a ‘reset’ moment.

I SAID YES TO… DOING WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF ME!

Why did you join The WorX?

Between working full-time, raising my son as a single mom, and occasional acting projects, my life has always been busy and on the go which didn’t leave much time for working out. Through-out the years, I slowly gained weight and felt sensitive to other people’s jokes and comments about my weight. I realized then that I needed a jumpstart to keep me on the right track.

What has made you the happiest about joining The WorX?

There are so many things that made me happy about joining TheWorX. Perhaps, the most significant one is learning that I am physical and mentally stronger than I think. At first, I was intimidated with the weights and the intensity of P90X but I eventually stepped outside my comfort zone by working out at my own pace in a no-judgment zone. I now feel more confident, energized, and my son is proud of the progress I’ve made so far.

What’s your best advice to someone who wants change?

This journey is about you! It’s never too late to start. Block away the negativities and surround yourself with others who will cheer you on. Try different exercises to find out what works for you. Remain true to you, acknowledge your feelings throughout the journey, and never give up. It’s a long process but it’s absolutely worth it, and if I can do it, so can anyone else.

Elizabeth Ortiz

DOWN FOUR DRESS SIZES: Elizabeth Ortiz, Accountant

I SAID YES TO… SELF-DISCIPLINE

Why did you join The WorX?

I joined The WorX because I was lacking confidence in myself. I was unhappy with my physical appearance. I was overweight and unhappy but too lazy to make a change. I was starting to ruin relationships with people I cared about because I was projecting my unhappiness onto others.

What has The WorX brought to your life that you could not find at other gyms?

A diverse work out environment of all shapes, sizes, and ages where I feel welcomed and motivated. When I miss a day I feel guilty and can’t wait to get back. I have never had a place that made me feel that way about getting my work out on.

Whats your advice to someone who wants to change?

Mind over matter! Set REALISTIC goals for yourself. If it’s your weight that you want to change, don’t focus on the number on the scale but more so about inches and how you feel when you look in the mirror. If you want to change your mental toughness, don’t be so hard on yourself. Know your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Lean on others for support. It won’t be easy but it will always be worth it.

Melissa Green

I SAID YES TO… MAKING MYSELF A PRIORITY!

FOUND THE CONFIDENCE TO BELIEVE IN MY ABILITIES: Melissa Green, Private Company Manager

What has made you happiest about joining The WorX?

Being part of a community of such wonderful people. I work a very stressful job but every time I’m at The WorX, I feel inspired and motivated to reach my goals because I’m surrounded by such great people.

What has The WorX brought to your life that you could not find at other gyms?

Accountability. I’ve tried other gyms, but TheWorX and The WorX family has kept me accountable for my success. I love the challenges, especially the team ones. Quitting on yourself when it comes to getting healthy is something I’m sure many people are “okay” with, besides life happens, but quitting on someone else is a different story.

What’s your best advice to someone who wants change?

Pick a goal and run, walk or crawl towards it now! Don’t put it off. You are stronger than you think and capable of great things if you just take the first step.

Carmen Matos

I SAID YES TO… WEIGHT LOSS DESPITE MY DISORDER!

CONTROLLED DISORDER: Carmen Matos, Government Training Specialist

Why did you join The WorX?

I was diagnosed with a disorder that caused me to rapidly gain weight that was extremely hard
to lose. After two years of trying to do it on my own, I felt defeated because no matter how hard I thought I was exercising or eating healthy, I didn’t see the results I needed. To make a real change, I stepped outside of my comfort zone and joined TheWorX, where I found group fitness, Team Challenges, and online support.

What has made you happiest about joining The WorX?

Community. The community I’ve gained at The WorX has made me incredibly happy. If you need an accountability partner, someone to help you with health grocery shopping tips and advice, or someone to send you a text asking you where have you been because they’ve missed you at the gym, you can find it at The WorX. The WorX is just as much of a family and community, as it is a gym.

What was your defining moment to join?
I didn’t need convincing to join after my free trial period which included taking Maia’s P90X class–a class that truly intimidated me. It was hard and I wanted to give up so many times but Maia’s words pushed me through. With every “Do YOU”, “You deserve this,” “Don’t give up,” I pushed myself to a point I didn’t think my body could go. After that class, I knew this would be my gym home!

Cheryl Zizzo

I SAID YES TO… A BETTER VERSION OF ME!

GAINED A FIT FAMILY: Cheryl Zizzo, Freelance Graphic Designer

Why did you join The WorX?

I didn’t realize it at the time but my life lacked The WorX. I was sitting on my couch eating a pint of ice cream and perusing some work out ideas on Pinterest. Years prior I had done Weight Watchers and lost close to 50lbs through dieting alone and referred to myself as “skinny fat”. However, life happens
and I gained it all back (plus more), I wasn’t happy and had been trying to get back on track for a few months. I knew I needed to be more active, yet my last gym membership was a complete waste of money. I hated that feeling of being a hamster on a wheel.

When you think of The WorX, what comes to mind?

“Be your own kind of beautiful”……. Not just because of how it’s appropriately placed as the first affirmation you see when you walk in and the last reminder to yourself when you leave. Everyone who is part
of The WorX is their own kind of beautiful; a diverse community of different levels but with a common strength and commitment of being a better version of him or herself.

Rebecca Lady

I SAID YES TO… BALANCE!

WORK LIFE FIT: Rebecca Lady
Deloitte & Touche LLP –
Advisory Managing Director

Why did you join The WorX?

My life was not in balance. Long days and nights at work preparing for my managing director promotion resulted in my family not getting enough attention. I wasn’t taking care of myself and life was on autopilot. Once I realized that life was happening, but I was not living, I knew I had to make a change. When I shifted the focus to myself, I was able to do a better job at taking care of my family and my job. It’s not easy to achieve Work, Life, Fit, however, I have found that by taking one hour a day to WorXout, I have more energy for my family
and job.

What has The WorX brought to your life that you could not find at other gyms?

No other gym focuses on the whole person. Not only do I go to The
WorX to WorXout, but I also go to see my old and new friends. By participating
in the challenges, I have been able to hold myself more accountable. As a result, I am more confident and have gained mind and body strength. My kids are welcome at TheWorX and love KidWorX.

When you think of The WorX, what comes to mind? High Fives. A simple gesture of celebration. I love that’s it’s a place which encourages community and celebrates diversity and inclusion. I enjoy coming to The WorX—it’s a place where “everyone knows your name”.
